I wrote this essay because I am horrified that the German government has supported the massacre in Gaza. As a German citizen, I am disgusted by the misuse of Holocaust remembrance to support a genocide.
The majority of the German media are complicit in the dehumanization of Palestinians. I was born in 1976. I was certain that I would never live to see the German population being manipulated through propaganda and one-sided reporting into supporting the mass killing of civilians. I thought such a thing belonged to the past. I was wrong.
The idea for the focus of this essay came to me when a German friend asked me how Zionism came about. I could not give a satisfactory answer. I had studied the subject as part of my political science degree. But I completed my studies 20 years ago, so I had to refresh and deepen my knowledge. When I began my research, I realized that I needed to travel to Israel to be truly certain of my judgment.
I receive no financial support. I have used my own resources to create and promote this website. I grew up with the belief that the lesson to be learned from the Third Reich is not to remain silent and to follow one’s conscience. That is what I have done.
I am aware that I cannot achieve much by doing this. But I agree with Rabbi Yaakov Shapiro, whose work was an inspiration while writing this essay. I do not share his belief in God, but I share the attitude he expresses in the introduction to his book The Empty Wagon: “We are not in this world to change things, to achieve things, or to complete things. We are in this world to do something.”
